Ruben's Notes

Ruben Marino - Thoughts and Impressions, #1

This was the furthest I've sailed, and its majesty is over the moon. The family sent Silas with me, quite stoic, and always dependable Silas. He's always handy and keeps me in check. We got this dame and a professor who also joined us. Sally's a head doctor and probably wouldn't be an easy mark for my flimflam, and the professor is kinda a daisy, but I'm guessing he doesn't leave the school faculty much. Cards, Backgammon, and getting to know each other made the trip go quicker; the weather couldn't have been any nicer, and that's the way I like my duck soup.

Silas knew the lingo, and that made it easier to get around Lima. I felt like Gulliver towering over these natives dressed in their bright colors as I moved my wallet to the inside pocket of my vest. After picking up various sundries and picking up attire that would make us seem less of a mark, we made our way to the appointed time to meet Mr. Larkin.

I gave Augustus Larkin the ol' up-and-down from the moment we entered the hotel and knew he was into dope. I'm pretty sure Sally caught wind of what I was thinking, smart gal. The other two at the table were introduced. To Gus's left was a swarthy gentleman with a fancy sword by the name of Mendosa. The fellow opposite was Jackson Elias, who was clutching his pipe with white knuckles, nervous and why? As old Gus was coughing into his handkerchief and talking with his hands, I could track marks leaving evidence of his vice. He told us that there were riches in the Pyramids, and any supplies we would need would be compensated. It would be a few days before we would leave, and both he and Mendosa took their leave back to their hotel.

A few moments after Mr. Larkin and Mendosa left, Jackson came clean that was his alias, and he went by Jesse Hughes, an author from the States. We swore that his secret was safe, and he'd done some investigating on Mendosa, who is a real bat cat according to the natives. They claimed he was a vampire, which would be scary if you believed in that sort of malarkey. He was also tied into some kind of cult with what he thought maybe had a dozen members. I wonder if Mendosa got Larkin hooked on Smack and is using his knowledge to try and get the golden treasures from the pyramid...?

Professor Thompson - Journal Entry #1

1921-1-15

Exciting news appeared in the paper today, a pyramid appears to have been discovered in Peru. An expedition is being assembled, I must see if I can secure a place in it.

If true, there is so much we can learn. To think that pyramids might have been built outside of Egypt. Most exciting. I’ll be speaking to the Dean today, I just hope approval can be obtained in time, I know these things take time.

1921-1-17

These yanks are so quick with their decisions, unlike the administrators back home. I am cleared to make the journey. Now to secure a place with the expedition leader. If only the approval had come in sooner in the day; I’ll have to visit the telegraph office tomorrow.

 1921-1-19

Confirmation has been received, and I have secured a place on the team. I also made sure to purchase a train ticket immediately upon receipt of the news. The planning process can now commence. With this happening during the semester, I will need to work with the other professors and the Dean to make accommodations.

 1921-2-27

After a month of preparation, the train trip has commenced. I am in for four days of travel on this leg, followed by approximately two weeks on a ship. My understanding is that I will be spending the sea portion of the trip traveling with a few other expedition members. It will be interesting to learn from them and what their varied fields of expertise are.

 1921-3-3

I am back on solid ground, in the city of San Francisco. I have one day to rest before boarding the ship. I wonder how similar it will be to the journey I made across the pond to teach at Miskatonic University. After being stuck on a train for the past few days, I believe that I will indulge in a nice dinner.

As this was my first trip west of New York, it was fascinating to see much more of this country and how large it truly is.

 1921-3-18

We have arrived in Peru. I forgot just how much I dislike the sea, though I admit that it makes this feel like a proper adventure. I’m not certain if my walking is fully stable at this point, but my hope is that it will be tonight, for we have a meeting with our expedition leader and I want to make a good first impression.

My fellow expedition members that were on the ship are an interesting lot: a few blokes that are probably best described as ruffians, and a former student. Her presence was a true surprise, I did not expect to know anyone that would be on this journey, let alone someone that has been in my classroom. Knowing her area of study, I am slightly worried about what we are expected to experience, or is her mental health knowledge not the reason she is here? I was not able to find an answer on the sea journey, maybe her performance in the field will reveal the answer.

Ordo Templi Orientis

The Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO) in the 1920s was a mystical and esoteric organization that gained popularity under the leadership of Aleister Crowley. The OTO was founded in the early 20th century and drew inspiration from various occult traditions, particularly the teachings of Thelema, a spiritual philosophy developed by Crowley himself.

During the 1920s, the OTO aimed to explore and advance occult practices, spiritual enlightenment, and personal development. It focused on the pursuit of individual will, embracing the idea that each person has a unique purpose and should strive to fulfill it. The OTO incorporated ceremonial rituals, symbolism, and magical practices into its teachings, aiming to guide members toward self-discovery and spiritual growth.

Within the OTO, Crowley held a prominent role as the head and influential figure. His writings, including "The Book of the Law," served as the foundational texts of the organization, outlining its core principles and philosophies. Crowley's emphasis on individualism, ritual magic, and the exploration of mystical experiences resonated with many members of the OTO during this era.

Membership in the OTO during the 1920s involved participating in rituals, studying occult texts, and engaging in esoteric practices. The organization attracted individuals from various backgrounds, including artists, intellectuals, and spiritual seekers who were drawn to its unique blend of mysticism and philosophy.

The OTO's influence extended beyond its core members, as it actively sought to disseminate its teachings to a wider audience. Crowley and other OTO leaders conducted lectures, published articles, and organized public events to promote their spiritual doctrines.

During the 1920s, the OTO experienced both growth and controversy. Its esoteric teachings and unconventional practices drew criticism from some quarters while attracting a devoted following from others. Despite facing challenges, the OTO maintained a dedicated membership base and continued to explore the realms of mysticism, occultism, and personal transformation throughout this period.

Postcards from Dr. Sally Jones

Dr. Jones - Postcard #1

Dear Johnny,

This marks the first of many postcards documenting my travels in search of knowledge and understanding. Perhaps against my better judgment, I responded to an intriguing newspaper ad. Now, here I am in Lima, Peru, about to accompany Augustus Larkin and company on an expedition to the site of an ancient pyramid.

Our first meeting at Bar Cordano revealed Larkin’s dubious character. He suffers from withdrawals; presumably heroin, from what Reuben could tell. Though I don’t know of heroin causing a man to cough up a black substance. He tried to pass it off as recovering from malaria…and he seemingly bathes in cologne…what is he hiding?  He also inaccurately cited artifacts that were not even from the same period, as noted by Jesse Hughes, or should I say, Jackson Elias. Luis De Mendoza, Larkin’s right-hand man, glared at Jackson all night. According to Jackson, the locals refer to Mendoza as “the slaughterer.” The locals also think our destination is cursed. This is shaping up to be quite the adventure. I wish you were here.

The Masks of Nyarlathotep

Chapter 0 - Peru

Professor Arthur Thompson (Derrick)

Professor Arthur Thompson, fueled by an insatiable curiosity, has embarked on a journey to delve into the mysteries of ancient civilizations through the field of archaeology. Hailing from the picturesque landscapes of England, he developed a profound passion for history and exploration from an early age, nurtured by captivating folklore and historical wonders.

Having recently completed his studies at Oxford University, where he obtained a doctorate in Archaeology with a specialization in the study of ancient civilizations and their material remnants, Arthur is eager to apply his knowledge in a practical setting. His relentless pursuit of knowledge has led him to accept a role in an archaeological search near Lima, Peru, under the guidance of Augustus Larkin.

In the year 1921, at the age of 28, Professor Thompson embarks on this exciting opportunity as a young scholar in the making. He joins the team with great anticipation, ready to immerse himself in the archaeological search and contribute to the collective understanding of the past.

As he sets foot on Peruvian soil, Arthur Thompson's enthusiasm shines through. His insatiable curiosity drives him to explore the ancient sites and artifacts, hoping to uncover new insights into the fascinating civilizations that once thrived in the region.

This archaeological endeavor offers Professor Thompson a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience and expand his understanding of ancient civilizations. His relentless pursuit of knowledge and unwavering commitment to exploration will undoubtedly shape his budding career in the field of archaeology.

Ruben Marino (Pete)

Ruben Marino, a valiant corpsman hailing from Hoboken, New Jersey, bore the weight of immense loss and tragedy. Both his parents, esteemed doctors, perished in the ruthless wake of a German U-boat assault on a passenger vessel. Ruben's father, a compassionate physician, even extended his healing touch to members of local Mafia families when their bodies bore the scars of violence. Yet, it was the heart-wrenching secret harbored by his twin brother, Anthony—a tale of years spent enduring the unspeakable acts of a trusted priest—that shattered Ruben's world, leaving him consumed by an insatiable thirst for retribution.

As the tempestuous clouds of war gradually receded, another specter descended upon our nation—the Prohibition era. The government, cognizant of the needs of our war veterans, bestowed upon Ruben a series of contracts to distribute medicinal alcohol among those who had served. Ruben seized this opportunity not only to serve his fellow comrades but also to unearth the truth behind the malevolence that claimed his brother's life. Nurtured in the embrace of devout Catholicism, the loss of his parents, brother, and the horrors of war had molded him into an instrument of justice, prompting him to exact a deadly vengeance upon the corrupted priest. Though his actions could never resurrect his brother, Ruben derived a perverse satisfaction from compelling the priest to pen a confession before orchestrating his own demise, leaving behind an indelible imprint of guilt. Amidst this tragedy, solace found refuge in the serenity of the open waters, as Ruben took to sailing.

Empowered by his government contracts, Ruben forged connections within the covert realm of bootlegging—a treacherous trade fueled by speakeasies and organized crime. Through his distribution network, he gained access to influential figures in the underworld, including the very Mafia families his father once tended to in times of injury.

Ruben, having fulfilled his vow to his brother, discovered a semblance of closure. He had exacted vengeance for Anthony's torment, unveiling the harrowing abuse that haunted their lives. As for Ruben himself, he remained steadfast in his role as a corpsman, employing his experiences and connections to aid his fellow war veterans on their path to healing.

His dual existence as a distributor of illicit spirits and an agent of justice during the Prohibition era brought him face-to-face with the dark underbelly of society. Yet, through unwavering resilience, unwavering determination, and an unwavering sense of justice, Ruben prevailed. In the end, he not only achieved retribution for his brother but also left an indelible mark on the lives of those who had suffered abuse.

 Silas "Bones" Malone (Avery)

Silas Malone, born in 1887 in Wichita, Kansas, grew up on a farm and led an ordinary life. Seeking adventure and unable to start his own family due to limited space on the farm, Silas embarked on a journey across the country, taking up various jobs, some of them illicit. Settling on the east coast, he found work as a teamster and met Jennifer Slattery, whom he married in 1912. They had a son, Silas Jr., in 1914.

When World War I broke out in 1917, Silas was drafted and served as a truck driver in the logistics division. During this time, he joined the secretive Ordo Templi Orientis and used his deliveries to smuggle items for the Order. After exposure to gas in the war, Silas returned home in 1918 to find that Jennifer had tragically died. Overwhelmed by grief, he found solace with the help of the Ordo Templi Orientis.

In 1920, with the onset of Prohibition, Silas capitalized on his smuggling experience and became a well-known bootlegger. However, his notoriety caught up with him, prompting him to join his friend Reuben on a quest to find a treasure-filled Peruvian Pyramid. As they set sail, Silas clutched Jennifer's lucky rabbit's foot, determined to prove himself worthy of raising their son.

Dr. Sally Jones (Hayley)

Dr. Sally Jones, born in 1900, is a psychiatrist from New England with a particular fascination for the occult and Aleister Crowley. In 1921, driven by her obsession, she joins an archaeological expedition led by Augustus Larkin to search for a lost pyramid in the highlands of Peru. With a background in psychology from Miskatonic University, Dr. Jones challenges conventional thinking in psychiatry and explores the mystical world, drawing inspiration from her experiences with the expedition. Her insatiable curiosity pushes the boundaries of science while delving into the mysteries of the occult and its connection to the human mind.

Ate local cuisine. The chef and waitress (human) attempted several times to keep me from speaking with line cooks (Vargr) and reprimanded them for looking me in the eye. Local cuisine was delicious. Water planet, fish, apparently an aggressive species of it. Tipped the cooks directly. Did not tip the waitress as I was treated poorly for drinking my coffee and my colleagues were hurried along in the empty restaurant under the guise of our table being reserved.

Went to a clothing shop in an attempt to engross myself in local culture, was met by a human who tried to sell me rags. Went to the vargr in the back who helped me with sizing some local items to wear with pride. A bright shoulder cape of greens, purples, and blues made from one of the customary kilts (we did not have a local kilt in my size. I shall wear this item with the pride).

Shop owner called police to remove us, claiming to have asked us to leave. All present corroborated we were never asked to leave. Damian was stared down and when he wouldn't bow to the human enforcers we were escorted away.

More graffiti on the way to the train.

Headed to the palace to make contact with local government. Damian heard some scanner chatter about stolen vehicles. There's a second crew on this job we weren't warned about. Bring up during negotiations (underlined and circled)

Met with Minister Greener, minister of foreign affairs, transports and six other items. Informed us of another crew on the job and offered us off-the-books knowledge of the High N' Dry's location. Became irritable and uncomfortable when questioned about why the local Vargr didn't know their native language and why they only worked menial jobs.

We have considered stealing another of the dictatorships vehicles, similar to the previous crew, but decided against in favor of trains and climbing gear.

Report Detail: 887AC3
Agent Designation: 778A88
Personal report: Starting at 0800 hours tomorrow I had been summoned to a meeting with distinguished Admiral Strong on Flammarion for another assignment to complete along with other comrades Hamish, Jack, and Mark. Given transportation in a two-stop route to Walston. On our way there we underwent some training in our downtime, having Mark help me with my hand-to-hand combat. While he educated himself in the arts, which I find interesting for a man of his standing. When arriving at our intermediary point of 567-908 Hamish decided to teach the locals some shooting practices while Hamish repaired a land rover that had broken down.

After those small escapades, we made our way to Walston and landed. The place seemed sparse and cold. Greeted by the Officer there we were informed that our objective to retrieve the ship for the company Strong set our mission from had been pursued by another ship crew. One that was far more rambunctious and far less sociable than we are.  They had caused trouble in the town we were in a few days prior. I am subject to small discrimination in this particular colony as none of the human subjects seem to acknowledge my existence despite the fact that I am right in front of their faces.

It would seem my friend Mark took this disgrace personally and began acting irrationally. Starting a stir where one is not needed. I have also taken note that the population has taken a liking to a particular order of things. The Vargr seem to have bent the knee so to speak in their subjugation compared to the humans. They take orders without question and haste. They bow their heads down. And they seem to act in minor fear of the humans that control them. Trying to avoid conflict the best they can.

Some graffiti of a movement I know little about has sprung up in local towns. With our rival crew ahead of us, and with a reliable hover vehicle we need to get to that ship first. We took a local guide up to where the ship had crashed, only up to about 800 meters up the mountain. Our local sherpa divulged conspiracy theories about the graffiti we saw earlier. We made more progress on the mountain before my comrade Jack fell and got himself hurt. Mark patched him up and now we sit 900 meters above ground on a steep cliff.
